Diagnosed at Age 35

Hi everyone, my name is Kristen. I am 40 years old and from a small town near Albany, NY. I’m a single mom of two beautiful kids that keep me very busy. I’m also a second grade teacher. I have been teaching for 16 years!

Staying active and healthy has always been a priority for me even though I am not always consistent. I do try! When I was 35, I learned just how important it is to maintain a healthy body and mind.

In November of 2012, I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. I will never forget that phone call for the rest of my life. My kids were very little (2 and 4), and all I could think about was being ok for them.

After a personal decision to go for a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction, I knew I had a long road of recovery ahead of me. That is also when it hit me that stress levels can be toxic on the body. I needed something to help me deal with stress and worry, so I joined a gym. I didn’t have weight to lose but I needed to have a strong heart, body, and most importantly MIND.

Once I was cleared after my first surgery, I joined a gym. I started doing cardio 4-5 times week. I then started to notice a significant difference in how I was feeling: happier, more energy, and less stressed out and became more involved in different kinds of exercising.

I have been extremely busy and finding time to get to the gym is just impossible right now. In order to workout, I have to get up at 4:30am before school to workout at home. It completely changes my mood, helps me make better nutrition choices all day, keeps my body healthy and strong, and most importantly it helps fight disease. So it is definitely worth it.

I am working every day to put my health first (it’s not easy) but it’s necessary to live a happy healthy life and crucial to being the best mom I can be! Take the time to do something good for yourself - you will reap the benefits in so many ways!
